Housing agencies and support shelters throughout Ontario are overflowing. Agencies often have client wait list applicants beyond those people on the municipal housing wait lists. Shelters serving our communities have been at or beyond capacity for years. Temporary shelters improvised for short-term solutions throughout COVID-19 have not provided the supports nor safety features for residents in and neighbours of some of these locations.
The past few months have elevated the awareness of the shortcomings of our shelter system and we can learn so much to better house and serve those in our society who, often for no fault of their own, have found themselves without any option other than a shelter bed.
We can and must create better housing for these people with the wrap around supports they need to move forward and sustain their momentum.
An entire industry has been created to assess, forecast and monitor homelessness in every corner of our society. We must learn from local and international initiatives and determine best practices to accelerate the creation of housing and supports
